Chapter 25

Friday, 8:00 am

Harry had fallen in love with a rented Porsche Cayman when he’d once worked in Arizona. It had been the only bright spot during that miserable travel nurse assignment ̶ a time when he and Gina had broken off their relationship.

Gina had been terrified that Harry’s life was also in danger at the time. Her former spouse, Dominick Colletti, had broken parole and was in a get-even mode. He’d blamed Gina for his having been sent to jail.

Harry had been lonely, desperate for something, anything, that would brighten his life. The red Porsche gave him a piece of joy to live for each day. He would climb into that car and chase his unhappiness down the road with a foot stomped down on the accelerator.

In a strange twist of fate, Dominick was shot and died in the ICU at the same Arizona hospital where Harry was working.

But that was in the past.

It was amazing, Harry thought, how your life could change from one moment to another … like the wind shifting or turning on itself.

“Hey, babe! I’m home.”

The heavy silence was like a slap in the face.

He put the flowers down on the dining room table and walked down the hall to their bedroom. For a moment he was startled when their cat Tuva jumped onto his leg, dug her claws into his jeans. He bent down to pet her.

“Where’s our lady?”

The bed was made but the drawers were open, with clothes hanging out of the sides. Basically a mess. He looked on the top shelf of their closet where they kept their small luggage.

Gone.

Right away he knew what she’d done. She was off chasing after her brother.

Worry flipped into anger that squeezed his throat until he thought he’d gag.

It was hard to wrap his mind around the fact that even though Gina had talked to him every day, she’d lied. She’d promised, promised to rest so she could get through this difficult pregnancy and have their child.

Instead, she lied to me.

He walked back to the dining room, found a vase, and methodically placed the roses into the water, one stem at a time a time.

They were very beautiful.

In one fluid motion he picked up the
